January is About Groups and Friends
Each cycle of the Sun will expose what you are well-known, recognised or even famous for, in terms of the area of your life it’s picking up. What is just a normal part of your life, or yourself, will be inspected, examined, discussed and may even be photographed or filmed, so get ready. This exposure will make you sharply aware of how proud you do or don’t feel, about friendships and groups. If you feel confident about your circle, this will be a time to shine, and perhaps show off. If you don’t, then you will find that the process of being gawped at by other people, will encourage you to make changes in your life that mean one year from now, you will actually have something to be proud of.
This cycle about your ability to pool resources with others, collectively, forces you to confront yourself as others see you. Your brilliance (or the brilliant friendships and group involvements in your life) can be exposed at this time, perhaps happily so, as Jupiter is in conjunction with the Sun at the end of the month. Either way, what needs to stay/go will be wonderfully clear. Jupiter is a tremendous problem-solver, Aries.
Mixed Feelings and Polar Opposites
Friendship and group feeling? Well, you can be in AC/DC or the Brexit Party, Aries, but the month also ends with a Full Moon. It’s about neediness, but also the need we all have to feel needed! The Moon automatically sets up situations where someone gives, and someone (or something) else takes. It can be a tender, emotional and instructive time if everyone gets it right, but if the demands are too much, or the ‘giver’ is going overboard, the Moon’s emotional pull may need to be monitored and managed.
Now – Derek and Julia Parker (writing in Parker’s Astrology) note that Full Moons accompany traffic jams, stress, frustration and violence – they have discovered that the worst tragedies in Northern Ireland have occurred on or near Full Moons. My own research on the Full Moon confirms that we split ourselves in two, whenever it happens. We feel torn between one choice and another.
Circumstances force you, at the end of January, into uncomfortable situations where we fight internal battles with ourselves. Perhaps that part of you, which is here to shine, show off, and be on display in terms of your social life, your brotherhood or sisterhood, or the ensemble cast – is completely at odds with that part of you which is here to find security, and seek comfort and emotional safety. Maybe this is exactly what a friend or someone in the group is going through, Aries.
At Full Moon time, at the very end of January, you will typically be put in situations where other people are watching your ‘performance’ in a situation which is privately very challenging for you. This is why you should skip a Full Moon for any event where you know you will be the centre of attention. It’s hard enough to ‘shine’ in front of other people at the best of times, without this astrological roadblock. If you must go ahead with important plans during a Full Moon, though, make sure you have enough sleep beforehand – you’ll need to be at your best, in order to manage. What you get out of this squeeze is wonderful. It is year changing. Perhaps, life changing. Jupiter, arriving next to the Sun near the Full Moon, tells you that despite the challenge, the answer is so sweeping, so epic in its application – that all you really have to do with particular friends or groups is open the door and walk straight through.

Taurus, this month is about your career, unpaid work, or full-time study.
This is one of the most important seasonal changes of the year, and you really will feel as if there is a natural rhythm unfolding, as a new path opens up, and a new era begins right at the end of January, when so many Taurus people will accept a new position or role. Perhaps you were in the wrong job, as you realised in 2020, and now a different path calls. In other cases, if you have accrued good karma from years gone by, a flattering promotion, award or new position is waiting.
You can expect to feel a strong awareness of the past, present and future all at the same time, at the end of January – almost as if the universe is telling you, ‘That was your C.V. then, this is now, and over there, you’ll find success or solutions, tomorrow.’ The events, people or plans that come together now will remind you that for everything, there is a season – just like the old Byrd’s song, Turn, Turn, Turn. It’s a strange, quiet, contemplative time, when what opens up ahead of you, seems certain to dictate the next few months – even the next few years.
Now, the only caveat is the backwards-and-forwards nature of the process. Why? Mercury Retrograde in the first quarter of 2021. Three times a year, for about three weeks, Mercury appears to move backwards. For you, professional, unpaid work or academic issues are picked up, then put down in January-March. People change their minds. They’re too late – or much too early – and sometimes they don’t turn up at all. Connections are made, then lost. Commonly, the atmosphere at this time is busy and lively, but also shambolic. People recycle ideas, issues, plans and deals to see what will happen – but more often than not, what takes place leaves them stuck exactly where they were before! If you can ask for time to think and ponder now, it’s probably a good idea. Once this cycle is over, you will be in a better position to make sense of what has been ‘decided’ or under so much discussion. Yet, it works out very nicely for you, long-term, as if you are taking a new job, or resigning (or being pushed) from the old one, it could not come at a better time, in terms of the entire year, 2021. So, despite the shenanigans with paperwork, telephone calls, Twitter, your emails and the rest – Taurus, you begin 2021 with an answer for every ‘success’ question.

The focus for you in January 2021 is foreign or regional. Foreign places and people, other cultures, or regional differences. This may be accent, background, outlook or world view. For some Gemini people this will specifically involve a book, website, course or degree.
During this cycle, Jupiter in your solar Ninth House, you will long for people, places, plans and possibilities which seem bigger and better. They may be uncharted and unexplored in your life, or just a long way off. Amazingly, the opportunity to discover these enormous new vistas of potential will be handed to you on a plate. With enough faith, hope and optimism, Jupiter says, all this can be yours.
To make the most of this cycle, make sure you are prepared to see the big picture! Forget any attitudes or ideas which keep your world small and expand your perspective. Is what/who you want really so unattainable, so far off, or so vast? Is it all really beyond you, or will your attempts to make it there, turn you into the kind of person who can succeed? You’ll be building the safest structure you can manage now – patiently building a set-up that you hope will give you solid foundations, even though you’ll also have a number of realistic concerns at this time. There is typically a feeling of ultra-responsibility when Saturn arrives, along with extreme caution. The horoscope house, or life department, that Saturn affects in terms of your C.V. or social status – is not somewhere you can afford to be lazy, or spontaneous, or casual, or flippant. Saturn is about your need to take serious measures in serious times. Saturn encourages us to put walls up. You will find yourself merging with someone in terms of the money, the house, the business, the apartment or the possessions in this new cycle in 2021. Neptune in the Eighth House of sex and finance can often make us forget who we are, as a sense of personal identity and separateness dissolves, and we end up losing our boundaries. Once again, someone around you may go through this, in relation to you – or it may be you who blends yourself into someone else’s life. Is there anything necessarily wrong with these kinds of relationship phases with former, current or potential partners? Finally, this planet is about dreams come true, escapism and imagination. The Neptunian financial, property or business relationships which emerge now with a former, current or potential partner can give you all of this – a chance to be lose yourself in an imaginary world. Jupiter is now in your zone of old, current or possible lovers or work partners. At the very end of January, you also have a Full Moon in the same chart zone, so there will be polar opposites, mixed feelings or a momentous bridge to cross. Yet, within hours, there is also the vast answer you want, need and deserve. Later on, when Jupiter moves into your Eighth House alongside Neptune, there will be a tremendous opportunity to find a financial bubble.
There is a second story going on here, and it involves the world of pregnancy, babies, infants, schoolchildren, teenagers or Millennials. It also involves sexual relationships with parenthood potential. Here, karma comes into play in January.
Astrologers associate the South Node in Sagittarius in your chart with past life experiences, and you will now face people, situations and places which are strangely familiar. They may come disguised in different ways, but what unfolds will essentially be something you know very well. Expect a ‘Been there, done that’ feeling about the set-ups, individuals or issues which turn up now. This cycle is easy to manage because it allows you to draw on experience and instinct. You’ll also find the people and situations you draw towards you now are ‘repeats’ from the whole course of your life – it may literally be a case of ‘same old, same old’ or the situation, plan, place or people may be familiar, although repackaged. You have impressive inner knowledge to bring to the picture now. Even if you are not entirely sure where this knowledge is coming from, it will assist you. You have gone through several repeats of the South Node cycle you are facing now, at different points in your history. How can you serve others if you do not serve your own well-being first? Well, Virgo, there are astonishing answers right at the end of January. Let’s talk about your career, though. Your unpaid work or university/college degree.
The North Node in Gemini in your solar Tenth House, now, delivers people, places and experiences which are all too familiar from other lifetimes (or from this one!), and the sense that you may feel ‘Been there, done that’ about what happens when it comes around is very real. Like Bill Murray’s character in the film Groundhog Day, you may be repeating the past, on a regular basis now – however, the more you go over old ground, or meet with oddly familiar situations, the more you will learn. The idea now is to grow and go forward, even if the universe is playing the same old tape. Other people appear to be glued to their patterns, and no matter what you do to try and change things around you, life still seems to repeat itself, as if you were stuck on a loop. Your breakthrough will come when you accept that life is stuck on the repeat button because it’s (ironically) the best way to get you to progress. Observe yourself each time the loop repeats. What have you learned about managing life and yourself? If changes are required, now’s the time to do it! You may end up becoming a Zen master. Well, right at the end of the month, you have a glorious solution for any question regarding parenthood-potential sexual relationships; babies; infants; children; teenagers; younger adults. The end of January also brings mixed feelings, as every Full Moon is wont to do. However, whatever is squeezed out of you as February arrives, is a good thing. No, make that a great thing. This brings us to a discussion about Chiron, in your solar Seventh House of former, current and potential partners.
Chiron was the star of the show when the United Nations was born. It challenges you to attempt the most audacious acts and outrageous decisions – or accept them. Chiron was discovered in 1977, year of punk rock, cloning and test tube babies – it’s about getting away with things that make people’s jaws drop. It is named after a centaur superhero, famous for his skills with a bow and arrow. The symbol also looks like someone holding a bow and arrow. Just like a medieval archer, you will now find yourself faced with the seemingly impossible task of either a) hitting your target from an unthinkable distance or b) trying to hit several targets at once. The English astrologer Dennis Elwell equates Chiron with a kind of cocky impudence. It brings tests of nerve. How far can others go now? How far can you go? Watch out because they’re going to try. This will either benefit you, or be a challenge, depending on their intentions. Chiron will ask you the same question. What ‘impossible’ thing involving your former, current or potential partner, can you now attempt? Is it enough to be super-confident? Or do you need more time, more preparation, more practise? This cycle tests the parameters of possibility. If you succeed now it will clearly change the boundaries of what is realistic, acceptable, and allowable in your world. This cycle asks “Can I get away with it? Can they?” The astrologer Zane Stein, my friend over there in Western Australia, thinks Chiron is a maverick; you make up your own rules when it touches your life, and you do your own thing, even outside your own group. Even the punk rockers didn’t conform – they all went their own ways. This is now absolutely true of the solutions or opportunities involving the world of children and young people which appear at the end of January.

The end of January brings broad solutions and overdue answers, which make your family, household, apartment and/or house situation so much easier to resolve. This is more than a resolution, though. It is an open door into a very different sort of year when Jupiter, the greatest and best of planets (Optimus Maximus, according to the Romans) visits your domestic, ancestry, property and sanctuary sector.
Let’s look at the other side of Jupiter, from May, when he moves into your zone of babies, children, teenagers and younger people. This is hinted at now, with all these open doors for you, or major answers, involving members of the family. This may be your mother’s side, father’s side, your own created family or your partner’s relatives. It’s time to talk about Ceres, who precedes Jupiter in this sector.
Ceres describes the attachment between mothers and daughters, and the loss of illusion that occurs whenever the real world intrudes, busting all those ‘perfect daughter’ and ‘ideal mother’ myths! Ceres challenges daughters to be more accepting of their mothers, and it asks mothers to adapt to the way their daughters really are. Ceres is also very much about the connection between a mother-in-law and son-in-law. It is also about brothers. Peer at the family tree on either side and you’ll see the deal.
The horoscope house (life department) Ceres affects will show you the kinds of issues most likely to trigger questions about these unique relationships, or even connections with are thematically or symbolically about motherhood, or brotherhood.
If you are a woman, your Ceres cycle will ask you to look more closely at your connection to any female offspring. Alternatively, you may find it’s your bond with your own mother that is emphasised. It’s also common to find other people’s mother –daughter issues dominating the area of life which Ceres is affecting.
Ceres cycles have many ways of manifesting:
- Cancerian actor Tom Cruise had Ceres in the Seventh House on August 8th, 2001, when he broke up with Nicole Kidman and child custody questions arose.
- Ceres was also in the Seventh House when famous feminist Gloria Steinem (an Aries) finally married at the age of 66, on September 3rd, 2000.
- Taurean footballer David Beckham had Ceres in his Seventh House on February 20th, 2005, when his wife Victoria gave birth to their third son in a row.
- The playwright Arthur Miller, a Libran, married Marilyn Monroe on June 29, 1956, when Ceres was in his Seventh House too. Complicated female family issues tend to dominate when Ceres is around.
Consider this, though, Scorpio. In mythology, Ceres lost her daughter, and had to find a creative compromise, so she could allow both of them to move on without sacrificing the relationship altogether. Whenever you see Ceres turning up in your horoscope, you will learn about the way mothers and daughters function. The very end of January will bring some kind of sweeping solution with/for a family member that paves the way for other decisions, from May 2021. All of them terrific.

Right at the end of January, we have a Full Moon (mixed feelings, inner conflicts, polar opposites with other people) in your zone of internet, media, education and communication. The written and spoken word, and the world of ideas, language, the microphone, telephone and computer.
Yet, hot on its heels, comes a stunning, brilliant opportunity not possible in 12 years. It may be a part-time or full-time project. A course. A special role. Sagittarius, run don’t walk.
The Third House, where we find your fortunate ruler Jupiter at the end of January – also rules brothers and sisters, communication and short-haul travel (a quick plane trip, an overnight stay, a weekend car expedition.)
While the Sun passes through the Third House together with Jupiter, it will shine a huge spotlight on all these areas of your life, so you can judge them – and make decisions.
Let’s begin with your siblings. At this time of year, your relationship with them will be much more obvious to other people. Is the connection to your brother or sister something to be proud of, or not? The Sun will act like a huge, swinging torch at this time, passing over your brother or sister repeatedly, until you get the cosmic message. Cousins, too.
Have you been doing the best with what the cosmos has given you, in terms of your sibling or relative, or do you need to put more work in? The next two or three weeks will emphasise and underline every single point about the relationship until you know exactly what’s going on, and where you stand. The state of play with your brother or sister will be more obvious now and require your input.
Communication – your way with words and images, or ideas and messages – is also in the spotlight now and there is a whopping solution for you in late January. It’s time to be admired and recognised (even celebrated) if things are going well; your memo, speech, website, blog, statement, essay, academic paper, letter, meeting, postcard, song lyric, screenplay – or just your ‘big talk’ – could work wonders for you now.
And if not? The Sun in the Third House says “Take a course, buy a Thesaurus, brush up your language skills, clean up your handwriting, upgrade your computer, update your web knowledge, ask advice, learn how to connect…”

Right at the end of January, Capricorn, you will have a crossroads decision about your house, finances, apartment, business, charity and/or possessions that has not been possible for 12 years. You are in a stunning position to take full advantage of an epic solution to your question, which will deliver a bigger, better world of possibility, long-term.
As money inevitably leads us to questions about mortgages, property investment, the rent, leases, buying and selling (and the rest) we also need to look at Chiron in Aries in your Fourth House.
The Fourth House of your chart rules your home (typically, your house or flat, but sometimes your temporary accommodation). It also rules your family (that means parents, siblings and relatives, as well as partners and any children.) Because ‘home’ often means flatmates, roommates or live-in partners to people, they will also be prominent in this cycle. It’s very much about the money, of course, but beyond that – what money cannot buy, Capricorn.
And, of course, the place you think of as home can also mean the country you were born in, or the country you live in now. In relation to all of the above, Chiron now asks you what you can get away with. Of course, in 2020, you got away with an awful lot. In fact, what you pulled off with close relatives, flatmates/roommates, the house or apartment – was nothing short of jaw-dropping.
It all depends on how much work you’ve put in, of course, but also on your luck with property, rolling in at the end of January, to some extent. You can put your home up for sale now and be thrilled to find it sets new records for property auctions in your street. Or, you may have a problem to solve with the house, apartment, garden or other residence. Yet, in solving the problem, at the end of January, you find the solution is so phenomenal that it lifts everything up.
It basically depends on how aware you’ve been of the need for maintenance work over the last 12 months – and that means your relationship with your mother – or siblings – as much as it means your relationship with your house or apartment.
This can be your finest hour, if your son singles you out in his Oscars acceptance speech, or your new neighbours drop in, just to ask you who painted your gate. Don’t worry too much if it’s clear the home front is not all it could be, though. This is simply your cue to do what’s required, so that next year, you can bask in what you’ve achieved.

At the end of January, you will be offered a grand solution for an important question about your brand, appearance, name, title, image, reputation and the rest of your packaging, profile or self-promotion. This sweeping answer is vast in scope and will benefit you, and those around you too, for some time to come.
Jupiter, Saturn and the Sun in your zodiac sign (and that’s just the start) show you how to become who you always were. That person feeds groups. She or he, supplies the community. You are the ‘Aquarius’ of Ancient Rome, carrying the water which goes into the Roman baths. You give what people need to pool resources and to keep the circle unbroken.
Now, that aspect of yourself is set to come front-and-centre. So, Aquarius, we also need to talk about the South Node of karma in your solar Eleventh House of friendships and groups. What goes around, comes around, to quote Lenny Kravitz.
Friends are often in the background of our lives, but not in this cycle. Within just a few days, you’ll feel as if you are watching a Hollywood film of your life, likely Groundhog Day, as things feel so repetitive – with one or more of your friends cast in the starring roles.
You’ll either feel like standing up in your seat at the end and applauding, or giving the whole show a thumbs-down. Either way, you get to learn about your friendships, and what’s brilliant (or disappointing) about them.
At the same time, the Sun will illuminate your own performance as a friend because you are headed for your solar return – your birthday – between late January and late February. The transiting Sun will go through Aquarius, and form a conjunction to your natal Sun. So, we’re talking about a starring role, perhaps, as a good friend. As a great friend. Maybe, with the wider circle.
You’ll be thrown into situations which highlight exactly what you bring to your group relationships and friendships. Are you getting it spectacularly right? If so, you’ll feel a warm glow.
Social events will come along now, which throw you and your friends together. Or they get caught up in their own little life episodes – which suddenly, directly involve you. Everyone is watching – so how will you perform? More importantly, how effective have you been, over the last 11 months, as a friend?
That’s what the Sun will really expose now as your solar return approaches. Events in late January through February, will emphasise what’s wonderful, fabulous and marvellous in your social life – as well as what’s not. But, just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, it’s clear that this particular friendship or group wasn’t knocked up in a single afternoon either. So, look back, and back, and you will see that everything about this three-week period is actually about the last few months, or even years. You know, you can be in the Republican party in America, with all its dire outcomes in 2020, and still have a vision for 2021. A very new and different vision. It’s on that level.
You now have a rare chance to understand what’s worked best for you, in terms of your friendship with a certain someone – and what you know you’ve let slide. Either way, you win. This cycle is also about group chemistry. Together, you can shine at this time. If things are shaky, that will be obvious too – but at least you’ll have clarity.

You’ll become better known for what you do behind the scenes, now, than you do for the upfront stuff. This may be about religion, spirituality, therapy, astrology, psychology, the Tarot, healing, Reiki, dream interpretation or mediumship. At the end of January, Pisces, there is a substantial opportunity to resolve any issues at all you have, with your soul or spirit, but also to go straight through a big, open door to a bigger and better world in 2021. This is your inner world. But it is enormous and holds the most stunning potential, as February draws closer.
The Sun’s spotlight will swing on all the things you achieve privately, or by yourself – away from other people’s attention. This cycle is all about The Secret Life of You. Have you privately been seeing a therapist, to help fix your marriage? You’ll share it with others now. It’s about what you do quietly.
The Sun is neither negative nor positive, it just works like the real Sun – illuminating whatever it touches. Together with Jupiter at the end of January, this could involve you in going back to the church, or seeing a hypnotist, or fixing issues with a therapist. This is more than just a new year, though, it’s the whole of the year – and beyond, Pisces.
When it moves into the Twelfth House, the Sun lights up anything and anybody you have been keeping to yourself, so that everyone else can see it. Often, people get attention for their secrets at this time. Whatever has been covered up so carefully is finally exposed in your psyche, your soul, your spirit or your unconscious mind. We do associate this cycle with the aura and the chakra system.
The Sun always ‘finds’ (like a laser beam) those aspects of yourself, and your life, which are outstanding and special. The bits and pieces in your personality, and in your world, which are characteristic and unique. The fact that it’s all under wraps is irrelevant. Now is the time for you to inspect the hidden projects and plans, of your true, secret, inner self. Do you have something to be proud of, here? You will do, at the end of January, if you try.
You can feel exposed at this time – as if you’ve suddenly been made aware of everything that you’ve been covering up, or even forgetting about yourself. The exposure is useful, though, as it will enable you to get in touch with who you really are, when nobody else is around. What’s inside your clockwork? The clock is now being polished, cleaned up, repaired (if required) and put on display.
This stunning period of breakthroughs for self-examination at the very end of January, on the Full Moon (look up and you will see it) can happen through meditation, dreams, psychic experiences, astrology, counselling, therapy, or keeping a journal.
It can happen through being ill, going on retreat – or through being forced to live/stay/work in an isolated place, cut off from normal life. This cycle sheds light on the person you actually are, when you’re not out there being someone else’s friend, sibling, parent, child, partner, boss, colleague – whatever.
The world peers in now and says “Ah! That’s who you are – really. We always knew there was more to you than that.” You will feel, quite literally, self-conscious now – conscious of yourself, as it really is. You only get one chance a year to see the real ‘you’ on this level – but if there is anything that needs fixing up about your inner self, it will be impossible to ignore. Your secret self is known to Jungian and Freudian psychologists alike as your unconscious. Mediums call it your spirit. Right now, it may feel as if it’s all of you. Late January is very, very special.
