The Rod of Aesculapius
It doesn’t really matter if you use the word Aesculapia or Aesculapius for this asteroid symbol. We’re really talking about two ancient-world names for the same idea. The rod is the most important part of the symbol. The serpent or snake wrapped around the rod can be seen held by Aesculapia/us in most sculptures.
On June 27th, 2000, the genetic code of life was cracked (seen here in The New York Times) and that spiral shape looks surprisingly like the snake entwined on the famous staff, or rod. In fact, on that day, Aesculapius was at 13 Aquarius, exactly sextile Chiron at 12 Sagittarius.
Chiron is sometimes called ‘a wounded healer’ in astrology so there is a second connection there. (Although he was primarily a teacher, not a healer).
The Miracle Worker
The most dramatic healer in the horoscope is Aesculapia. The Romans set up temples to him, where people would stay overnight, hoping for a dream that would give them the diagnosis and cure, or a miraculous recovery.
As Dianne Skafte explains in her book When Oracles Speak, “In all of Western history, no institution has brought dreams and healing together in a more powerful way than the temples dedicated to Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine.”
As with most of their gods and goddesses – behind our modern astrological symbols – the Romans imported him and made him Italian. In fact, they shipped him in from Greece to cure the plague and believed he arrived in the form of a snake.
The Temples Thrived for 1000 Years
The temples thrived for nearly a thousand years. They were free and usually built near natural springs. After baths, fasting, ritual and prayer patients descended into chambers and slept, hoping for miracle cures. Afflicted Romans made casts of the relevant body part, to offer up to the God – and the priests in the temple (the Roman version of a hospital) would attend the patients.
Aesculapia is Jupiter’s grandson and the father of Panacea and Hygiea. The Hippocratic Oath taken by the medical profession names him, along with Panacea and Hygiea. These are the healing gods that mattered, along with Apollo, who was a multi-tasker – both leader and healer.
The God Who Could Cure Plague
To the Romans, he was the god who could cure the plague. It’s interesting to see how the asteroid shows up in some personal birth charts.
Pasteur, the man who defeated rabies, had Aesculapia at 24 Taurus in his personal birth chart. It formed a perfect trine to Mars at 24 Capricorn in his house of career. Minerva was also very close at 23 Taurus.
They found and named Aesculapia in 1923, when a Nobel Prize was awarded to Banting and Macleod for the discovery of insulin.
Magnified images of insulin show snake-like coils. The symbol for Aesculapia is a snake, wrapped around a rod. It is an ancient image, over 2000 years old. You still see the Rod of Aesculapius on the side of ambulances. The snake can also be seen if you look at images of Hygiea, his daughter. She often holds a bowl and snake. I’ve seen it on the windows of Spanish pharmacies. The famous coil shape of DNA resembles the snake and rod of Aesculapia. So does the Indian chakra system.
All of this is an important part of astrology, which runs on synchronicity – the powerful and meaningful connection between symbols. In fact, it’s the Astrological Method in action. What you do with it, is your sole responsibility as astrology is just one tool, in the tool kit of life. Yet, the asteroids open doors to knowledge.
Chiron and Healing
Remember that Chiron rules healing herbs and plants, quite specifically. He is mostly a maverick, though – a renegade teacher. He can turn up when you are seeing a medical maverick, not a mainstream doctor!
Aesculapius is about resurrecting and reviving – the miracle that pulls you back from the brink. Panacea is about cures and remedies, with ethical questions – like medical marijuana. Hygiea is about the old maxim ‘prevention is better than cure.’ What can you find? What is your chart saying to you? Watch for the synchronicity of symbols.
Any history book will reveal how the Romans, who gave us our modern astrology, saw this healing family. Each of them had very different functions and that’s where the meaning of the asteroids in your chart comes from.
You will get a great deal more from ancient statues and old paintings of the healing family of astrology, than you ever can from mere words. Rediscover these archetypes. Of course, as astrology is synchronicity, it may well be that they go and find you.
Aesculapius in Art
This god represents survival against the odds. There is an excellent British Museum ‘surviving’ sculpture of him in The Enlightenment Room. You can also see the symbol brought to life in paintings by Christopher Unterberger and Giovanni Tognolli.

Practical Chart Examples
In the zodiac sign of Cancer and the Fourth House, this asteroid might symbolise a person who resurrects old houses which are on the brink and renovates them, successfully.
In the zodiac sign of Leo and the Fifth House, this might be a person who saves the lives of children or brings them back from ‘the brink’ in other ways, through charity work. Leo also rules sexual relationships, so this might be a person who can never let one particular partnership go. It never quite finishes.

Hi jessica, thanks for this wonderful article. I have discovered the power of asteroids thanks to your teaching : Aesculapia at 13° pisces, near south node, is it about spirtual healing ? Have a great day & thanks again.
Thank you so much. Yes, you have a stellium in Pisces in the Twelfth House, though Aesculapia is too far from your South Node (in modern astrology we only allow 0-1 degrees or the chart looks very cluttered with the asteroids). You have a past life as a nun, perhaps, or a monk. Maybe you were in solitude and found your own spiritual path. You have returned in this life to explore the unconscious mind, your soul and spirit. Religion will push buttons with you, strongly for or against, actually. Aesculapia is most certainly how you bring back to life, resurrect and revive. So you could be the person in charge of adult baptism. Or to put it another way, you can take people who are on the point of no return with their faith, belief, psychic ability, mediumship, churchgoing, psychology, psychiatry – and perform a miracle. For more look up Twelfth House. This is huge for you in 2020, as Neptune is in Pisces transiting your Twelfth House. It also rules dreams, as well as clairvoyance – or the Roman Catholic church!
Hi Jessica
Firstly, I want to thank you for the YOUTUBE event. I had a few technical difficulties and trying to keep up with comments and what was being said was challenging for me this morning ., (my fault, late night and groggy this a.m, lol). I realized after that I could always go back and view event if I missed something 🙂 My Aesculpia is 15Gemini and I am taking an Herbal Medicine course. This is something I have been wanting to do for many years. I have also mentioned my interest in medical astrology. Is there a way sign up my husband (August 22, 1973, 12:22 pm, SYosset, NY) as a paid premier and link him to my account as he is not really going to check his and his life affects mine to some extent so I always try to check his chart, as well. I didn’t want to have to keep signing in and out of accounts and I cannot find Aesculpia on many of the other website charts. Thanks so much again!
Thanks for joining us on YouTube for #GeminiSeason and you can go back and watch any time. We will keep on picking up questions on Twitter too. How amazing that Gemini planets, the North Node and asteroids will all pass Aesculapia in Gemini. The asteroid of powerful healing – and you are on a herbal medicine course. He was of course a herbal medicine expert according to myth, and gathered what he needed from Mount Pelion. Let me ask my webmasters if we can pursue partner charts easily. Thank you.
Hi Jessica,
I am grateful for the insights and tools you provide to your readers. And the opportunity to get your personalized feedback is really a gift.
I was wondering what you think about my chart…I have Aesculapia at 9 degrees in Scorpio and many other aspects around 9 degrees as well. What opportunities do you see for personal growth?
Many thanks,
Lou
Thank you Lou. You will grow as a result of Uranus in Taurus in your Second House of charity, philanthropy, giving and receiving. You will go through quite a few oppositions from Uranus in Taurus (freedom from, and freedom through) opposite your Scorpio Eighth House factors. So you can be liberated by receiving money or other benefits, which sets you free for obvious reasons. Or you can feel nicely liberated by giving to others. This is where the growth is, over the next few years.
Hi Jessica, thanks for this! I also just wanted to second Party’s idea about linked partner charts. I’d love that option too, if it ends up being possible : )
Thank you! I will ask the chaps today and particularly Alyas our programmer.
Hi Jessica,
Thanks for this article – I love learning more about the Asteroids, they provide so much more information and context to our charts, they really help. I was signed up through MeetUps for your YouTube event today, but unfortunately, 5am didn’t work with kids etc, so I’m looking forward to having a moment of Peace later today or tonight to catch up!
I have Aesculapia at 23 Cancer, but I actually have a lot of direct hits in my chart at the moment. Perhaps that is why I feel like “I am on a RollerCoaster, biting on Tin Foil, immediately after eating 6 bran muffins and drinking 4 Long Black coffees” :’/
Enjoy your Day! and thanks again 🙂
Blessings,
DinP xxx
Thank you. I know 5.00am was insanely early for Australian readers, but our Stonehenge Eclipse Meetup on June 20th, 21st should be an easier time. Even if the children are still there, it may be a more convenient schedule for this side of the world. You are a natural parent, mentor, guide, teacher, instructor for your own and other people’s children. Your Moon at 2 Leo has been opposed by Saturn at 2 Aquarius, though, for the first time in 29 years. That is hard work and you need help. It is here, and may in fact be coming to you when you sleep. You were born with the Moon (motherhood) in Leo (Queen to a younger court – your heirs to the throne) in the Fifth House. That can and will return to you once you have had some healing. This may be on the physical level so perhaps you do need to see a doctor, dentist or similar. Perhaps it’s purely emotional, psychological and spiritual – in which case you are being assisted. Your old Leo Moon self will be back when you are good and ready, at full strength. Aesculapia in Cancer is also very much about mothers and children, and a healing process.
Hi Jessica, is there more classes like these please? A lot of your members seem to know how to read their degrees? How may I learn mine if U not mind me asking. I have a lot to learn personally and knowing a little of my own astrology & how to read it will help a great deal in my karmic position right now. I also have the time & yearning to learn so to help me through this positively with humility.
Is there anything else U may help me with that I’m truely sorry for & that will help, I’d be ever grateful. ThankU.
Kind regards me paying my karmic debt
We have a class every week, and you are welcome. They are always free. You can go back to the beginning if you like. We started in March. You need your chart to get the most from it, though. That way you can look at the degrees (numbers) of the planets in your horoscope and see if other transiting or travelling planets are passing through, at the same degree – that is how you make specific predictions.
There is so much to learn about astrology but I find I’m always drawn to the asteroids, I love reading about them. I have Aesculapia in Sagittarius which is sextile my Moon in Aqua and exactly trine Minerva in Aries. I confess I don’t really know what this means but it’s very intriguing.
The asteroids are essential to a modern astrology chart, as they are part of the Roman family tree which began with Mercury, Venus and the rest. Your Moon in Aquarius is emotionally drawn to groups, circles, communities. These are usually about progress and improvement (rather than just the darts team at the local pub!) and so we find Moon in Aquarius people raising funds for refugees from Tibet, or dedicated to preserving museums or art galleries. With Saturn, Jupiter and finally Pluto all poised to go through Aquarius, you will find a dramatic, wonderful, new beginning arises out of the group, among whom very special friends feature. For example, you may be made a godmother by one face in that group, or there could be a powerful new relationship emerging from it. There may be another ‘birth’ (a plan or idea, perhaps) which is very precious and full of potential.
Thank you for this Jessica.
I have just been reading about the Panchen Lama who was kidnapped from Tibet 25 years ago and sent for ‘re-education’ by the Chinese Authorities. He was only six at the time and believed to be the youngest ever political prisoner. I remember it well. Nothing further was heard about him – until today.
Would you say that Aesculapia has anything to do with his return from the ‘unknown’ ?
Also I wanted to point out that Tibetan Buddhism derives from ancient Egypt – where the symbol of the Pharoah was a serpent.
Very best wishes to you.
Tibet is on my radar. She is in the path of the June 20th, 21st eclipse at 0 Cancer. I think you are tuning in psychically here, as well as using the astrology. My feeling is that the Cancerian, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, will be at the heart of a great change for Tibet. China is obviously in trouble. Let’s see what happens next. Best wishes to you, too and thank you for your reply. Aesculapia is about returning from the point of no return. Everyone assumes Tibet is finished. I don’t think so. No, not at all.
Thank you Jessica to you and your collaborators Penny Thornton and Keira Oser, great addition to the site. Enjoyed very very much youtube yesterday, seeing the face behind the voice on podcasts makes connection more persona l:)
I have 4 planets/asteroids in the same degree as my Aesculapia in 14 Tau. I was “resurrecting” Taurus themes few times in my life, charity philanthropy personal finances….Can you please solve the puzzle how Neptune 14 Sco, Bacchus 14 Pis, Apollo 14 Gem and Hygeia 14 Ari fit into the big picture. Thank you!
Thank you! I will pass that on to Penny and Kyra. Our Stonehenge Eclipse Astrology 2020 event is coming up on YouTube on June 20th, 21st so we’d love to have you along for more questions and a YouTube Premiere viewing. You have such an unusual pattern at 14 degrees there. Your Moon-Saturn conjunction in Aquarius in the Eleventh House of groups and friends is more important, actually. You are heading towards a Saturn Return in Aquarius, and then Jupiter will follow in 2021, so these are rare transits. Saturn can only do this once every 29 years and Jupiter, only 12. Groups are interesting things. People with similar ideas and viewpoints gather together. As ‘one’ they can build incredible results or produce the most abundant outcomes. Together they do more than they ever could alone. Yet, Aquarius is about the outsider and the group. There is a big gap here. It’s rather like Sir Winston Churchill battling his own Conservative party in the Wilderness Years. It’s not unlike John Lennon’s difficult relationship with The Beatles. The irony is, there was never that much difference between Winston and the party, and its ideals, or Lennon and where the Beatles were coming from, in terms of their thoughts and opinions! It is very, very important that a group has unity. Communication is everything. Proper talking and listening. Good manners. Respect and the intention to close the gaps and cross the great divide. Compassion helps. Sometimes a person who feels outside a group, or opposed to a group, has a lot of strong feelings and emotions to deal with. We often find outsiders are off balance in some way, not grounded, not ‘together’ as they usually are, or otherwise off kilter. That is often not their fault! So, understanding and empathy are required. From the outsider or opponent’s point of view, it would be reasonable and sensible to accept that overall, these ‘differences’ are pretty slight. Everyone is an independent, socially distanced individual and what’s wrong with that? Yet, together, if a big leap is taken, amazing things are possible in the year 2021. Slow build, slow growth, fantastic results.
My Aeesculapia is in
20° Gemini 01′ 03″ R
And my brother who passed away recently was Gemini June 07, 1977
I wonder what it all means and what this position brings and reveals into my life…
Thank You
It is very possible you will have contact from your brother in the spirit world, between now and January 2022. The North Node will pass 20 Gemini, which rules siblings, and you have Aesculapia there, at 20 Gemini, so you can bring communication back from the brink. It will happen naturally and easily, and you will be relieved to know he has passed to the other side of life and is letting you know he’s okay.
Hello Jessica!
Lovely to see the new articles. As a long-term member (since 2016) I am so pleased to see that this site always offers so much! I have Aesculapia at 0 in Virgo. What does this mean for me? Since it is at 0 Virgo, am I also affected by 29 in Leo? Also, how does this play out with the other placements I have in 0 and 1 in my birth chart. If you need background then I am married with two children under the age of 10, currently working towards creating my own skincare product business that I hope to launch when the retrogrades are over. Thanks so much in advance for answering my question! I wish you a happy weekend.
Thank you – and thank you so much for your membership for the last four years. You have an eclipse at 0 Cancer coming up near June 20th and 21st, depending on where you are in the world. You may want to assume nothing on those dates and defer judging or acting, as eclipses are blind spots. This one aspects Virgo and your Sixth House of work so it’s not particularly useful. Your skincare business sounds interesting. I channelled Anita Roddick the other day, and she is adamant that there should be no packaging, beyond exquisite, recycled paper and cardboard boxes or bags, into which your fill-up container goes! Very interesting. When Jupiter goes to 0 Aquarius in December you will have your best chance in quite a while to reshape your working life.
I think I am tuning into you Jessica – or my spirit guide is tuning into yours!
Every time I do, my computer jumps into flight mode mid sentence. Gosh.
Sorry! As my colleagues know, my telephones and computers have constant problems, because I am a medium and have spirit world interference.
Dear Jessica,
I have Aesculapia in 23deg in Leo – same degree as NN in Scorpio and SN in Taurus.
Could it be something karmic. I have no children and my efforts to have were without success.
Thank you.
Your efforts to have children were without success – that is Aesculapia in the Fifth House. Just when you assumed parenthood was over in your life you will be asked to substitute parent another person’s child, or younger people (as a generation) full stop. I had a client who had a low sperm count many years ago, and he had Fifth House/Leo issues. He went on to adopt and also make television for teenagers. So – twice.
Hi Jessica
Thank you for the astrology classes and discussing the asteroids. So much great background and insight. I am hoping you can tell me about Aesculapia in Taurus. I have Chiron and my Descendent a few degrees away too. Thanks!
This cluster in Taurus in your Second House is really like having tenants in one room of your home. The door opens onto your accounts, your piggy bank, your most valuable possessions, your tax documents, your money in a jar and your will, property deeds, insurance papers, superannuation/pension contracts and so on. If you can imagine a new tenant crashing into that room, that is the Uranus in Taurus transit which began in 2018 and does not end in full until 2026. How are your new/old tenants going to get on with each other? Chiron is interested in everything that is experimental, daring, audacious and a big stretch. Uranus always brings revolution, radical change, upheaval with him. Yet he also sets himself and everybody else free, when he comes to stay. You are going to see a lot of moving and shaking, and just about every piece of paperwork and every last penny or red cent, will be affected. The trick is knowledge. Update your knowledge, as often as you can, as fast as you can, as widely as you can – from trusted sources. Uranus by his very nature is about ‘instant’ outcomes which can arrive in just a few moments. A very smart thing to do would be to ask yourself, how you can purchase freedom. What will it cost you? For more on this transit, look up Uranus, Second House, Aesculapia, Chiron. The Descendant, if your birth time is accurate, is about your former, current or potential partner. Aesculapia is about reviving and resuscitating. Recycling is associated with that asteroid in Taurus in the Second House and so is renovating. Chiron, as you have seen, is about seeing what you can get away with. This will not be business as usual for you. Not for many years.
Aesculapia at 6 degrees Gemini in my chart is closely conjunct my Moon and mercury at 5 degrees and my venus at 8. All four square my tight Mars Pluto conjunction in Virgo. (I am also a sun Gemini at 28 degrees and Libra rising.) How would I read this? Is Aesculapia in my 9th house or my 3rd? I’m interested in returning to a previous position in publishing am wondering if that tight square from Mars and Pluto to Aesculapia might remove any good luck.
Aesculapia is not conjunct Venus in your chart – he is conjunct your Moon and Mercury, which you say are both at 5 degrees Gemini. You don’t say what your Mars-Pluto conjunction degree in Virgo is. The only thing I can read here is that you have Aesculapia at 6 Gemini, which is a symbol of someone who can bring back websites, advertising, computers, telephones, television shows, radio programs, podcasts, newspapers, magazines, journals, debates – from the point of no return. Every time you have a transit to 5-6 Gemini this occurs and your next substantial transit is the North Node at 5-6 Gemini, which will also return you to life as it was 19 years previously. That will eventually come your way, although the North Node is still at the very late degrees of Gemini as I write this.
Hi Jessica, I have Aesculapia and my Sun at 28 Cancer. I also have Uranus at 28 Libra and Chriron at Aries 28 plus Ceres, Psyche and the South Node at 29 Taurus and the North Node at 29 Scorpio. And Fortuna and Apollo at 27 Gemini so it’s quite a pile up! Can you please interpret this for me? Thank you!
Sure, you have quite a lot of weather at 28, 29 degrees passing through. Most of this is about your former, current or potential partner. Probably in love, but perhaps in work. It probably feels as if things never stop changing, but adapting and adjusting is the way, even if you are surfing one wave after another. It helps to stop in between and step back to see what is being created in your life. Despite the intensity, it’s really about learning how to use your willpower and self-control to become mistress of your own ship. You have to take the wheel. Running your life with this person, or with your thoughts/feelings about who was once there (or could be there in 2021) is about empowerment. The difference it makes to you, emotionally and psychologically, to know you are ‘running this’ will be amazing. Uranus in your Seventh House is about your old, current or possible other half. The North Node in your Eighth House is about financial relationships which were, or are, or could be – capital R ‘Relationships’ as well. Rather than feeling pushed and pulled by life, or other people, try to get yourself into a position where you have your hands on the scales. Firmly manage those scales. You are on one side, and he/she is on the other. It’s your set.
Hi jessica my aseculupia is 5 degrees libra Diana 7 degrees libra what can you tell me about the 2 asteroid in libra bring into my relationship.
You have some karma to complete with your partner in 2020, 2021 and January 2022. You will need to go back to your life as it was in 2001, 2002, either with your partner (if you were together then) or with somebody else. If with someone else, then what was done then, has led to ripples of time, which will reach you in 2020, 2021 and January 2022. You will need to go back and remember as much as you can about what you gave, what you offered, and what was given or offered in return. There may be unspoken debts and credits between you and another, or even with the world itself, that must now be repaid or settled. Sometimes there is a prior incarnation going back decades or even centuries into the past and this is sometimes why couples in particular have so many deep decisions to make.
Hi Jessica,
My health has been a challenge for a while now so I’d like to be able to utilise this asteroid a little better. As it’s the only thing I have in Scorpio I’m not sure how to do this. I did check out the oracle and received Panacea, which is so funny, with the 12th house as guidance.
Panacea is the daughter of Aesculapia and in Rome, she was a symbol of cures, remedies and solutions which had an ethical or moral question. So, for the Romans, Panacea was about who or what ‘fixed’ you, or fixed a difficult situation, but there were always rights and wrongs. I will give you a modern example. People with difficult medical conditions find that smoking cannabis helps their symptoms. Yet it remains illegal in many parts of the world. You have Aesculapia in Scorpio and Panacea in Gemini in your chart, natally. Aesculapia has nothing to do with your body, but everything to do with your money, business, charity or property. When he is triggered in your horoscope, you make comebacks financially, or find that a situation with your house, apartment, possessions, good cause or company which you assume is virtually over, returns – miraculously – and resurrects. Panacea in Gemini is about using the internet writing, publishing, podcasting, broadcasting and your way with words, ideas and images – in order to be heard and read. This is where you heal and help yourself and other people, but there is always some kind or moral or ethical question that goes with it. My immediate thought is that you need to keep a diary. You also need to meditate. Perhaps, to channel. The cards give you Panacea in the Twelfth House, and you have Panacea in the sign of words, in your own birth chart. The Twelfth House is about solitude, religion, astrology, mediumship, the Tarot, dream interpretation and all that is solitary and introverted. It is about the spirit or soul. Was your question ‘What do I do about my health?’ or ‘What will happen with my health?’ The question is really important. You also need to set a timeline. Were you asking about 2020, 2021, 2022 or forever? Go back and do this again and focus it a little more. But in general, Panacea in the Twelfth House is about finding a remedy by reaching for your faith in God (or your God) or other aspects of the soul, like horoscopes, psychic readings, dream interpretation and so on.
Thank you Jessica! And thank you for the free weekly astrology lesson. I love it!
Dear Jessica,
Thank you for your astrology lessons every week. I’m particularly impressed with Aesculapia as he made me realized the importance of astroids. Last September when Jupiter moved forward from his retrograde at 14 Sagittarius you told us every factor at 14 will be affected. I have Aesculapia at 14 Libra. At that time my lost business partner reappeared and promised to join me.
Now in crowded Gemini weather, I have an intense stallium in Libra: Minerva 9, Apollo 10, Proserpina 10, Neptune 12, Aesculapia 14, Diana 24. Please let me know your accurate predictions on how these aspects affect my business and private life.
Thank you so much for that information, which for me as an astrologer, is invaluable. Your Aesculapia at 14 Libra in the Seventh House (partners) was triggered when Jupiter at 14 Sagittarius moved forward – and your lost business partner reappeared! You should be pleased that your Libra stellium in the Seventh House of former, current and business partners is there in your chart, as we have Saturn starting his trine (supportive, flowing pattern) to that in 2020 and he will continue in 2021. Jupiter enters Aquarius and also begins a trine, in December 2020 and throughout 2021. You also have the North Node in Gemini (more flow) making a trine from the year 2020, throughout 2021 and into January 2022. What happens out there in the world helps the connection with your former, current or potential partner. We are going to see people power, genuine democracy (power shared across all of us, not from the top down), a boom in community and groups, and amazing advances with the internet and also transport and travel, in 2021. That works extremely well for you and your former, current or potential partner in work or love.
That’s insightful thanks Jessica.
I have Aesculapia in Cancer at 22 which is where it is at the moment and I have noticed that I am doing a bit more of counselling with young people than usual.
Love your work.
Thanks
June
Thanks so much June – and you will bring at least one of them back from the brink. Watch for snake omens, they can happen on this cycle.
